Dear UWS Student
UWS has an Exchange Programme with Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. We have had good success in the past with Mechanical Engineering students studying there.
Students in Year 1 or Year 2 should consider whether or not study abroad is something you wish to consider. I am sorry to say if you are in Year 3 or 4 then it is too late to consider a study abroad opportunity.
Relevant programmes at Mercer University that may be of interest to students in the School of Engineering and Computing are:
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Industrial Management
- Computational Science
- Computer Science
- Information Science & Technology
Therefore, if you are an Engineering student on the Mechanical Engineering, Product Design and Development, or Engineering Management you could consider studying at Mercer University. For Computing students the programmes that would be most suitable are probably Business Technology, Computing Science, and Information Technology. It is necessary to prepare a learning agreement before your departure and when this process is carried out it may be found that a suitable programme of study for you for a semester abroad cannot be found.
If you study at Mercer you will be required to live in the Halls of Residence there. Depending on which Hall of Residence is available and which you choose this will cost between $3000 and $4000 (£2100 to £2800 at current exchange rates) for the semester. I estimate that you should budget around £300 per month for living expenses and your semester abroad would start in Mid-August and end around mid-December. That’s about 5 months so say £1500. You need to purchase health insurance while there and I think this costs around £600. Then there is your flight to there and back which is about £400. Therefore, I estimate it will cost between £5500 and £6500. These costs are based on my memory of what the UWS student there in the 15-16 academic year estimated her costs would be. Your actual costs could be higher than this. One more point is that you will need to go to London to get your Visa to study in the USA. The cost of this is not included above. In addition, our student had to show that she or her sponsor had at enough financial resources to prove they would not become a burden on the USA. If I remember correctly his/her parents were able to do this by showing some bank statements.
Because of the exchange programme there are no tuition fees to be paid at Mercer University. Furthermore, you will remain a student at UWS during your semester abroad so you will still have your tuition fees to pay at UWS. For Scottish and EU students SAAS will pay these fees in the same way as if you were studying at UWS in Scotland. In addition, Scottish students can apply for a student loan as if they were studying for the full year in Scotland. When my son did a year of study abroad he applied and received the maximum possible student loan for that year.
The application deadline is 1st of March for studies starting in mid-August 2016 but we should aim to have the application completed by around 24 February.
The application process is on-line.
If you wish to find out more I suggest that first you visit the Mercer web site at http://mercer.terradotta.com/?go=mercerexchange which is where the application page lives and where specific information for Student Exchanges can be found. The public web site for Mercer University is http://www.mercer.edu/
Before you begin the application process you need to be nominated by UWS and this is something that I do in my role as an International Coordinator. Once you have looked at the Mercer information and confirmed that you have the financial resources available please contact me to allow me to nominate you. Please make the subject line of your email:
Subject line: Name Banner ID – Nomination Request for Mercer University (example Joseph HEFFERNAN B00129849 – Nomination Request for Mercer University)
In your email to me include the following information:
- Banner ID:
- Date of Birth:
- Programme of Study at UWS: (example Mechanical Engineering)
- Current Year of study at UWS (Year 1 or Year 2):
- Expected start date at Mercer (August 2016 or January 2017):
I will only communicate with you via your student email address. Therefore I strongly suggest that you are using this account on a regular basis or that you have set up email forwarding from your UWS student email account to your personal email address.
